Steps for Staying Safe After a Storm | SERVPRO of North Huntington

11/21/2023 (Permalink)

Storm damage. Roof damage from tree that fell over during hurricane storm Has a recent storm left your home in catastrophe? Call SERVPRO of North Huntington today! We are here to restore your house.

We are all aware of the threat of storms for our community no matter what time of year it is. Strong summer storms can easily build and whip across the bay area, winter storms can pop up and take us by surprise, and coastal storms or even hurricanes can blow through town and leave all kinds of damage in their wake.

While preventing storms isn’t possible, there are things you can do to stay safe before, during and after a storm to protect yourself and your family from danger or possible injury.

Before the Storm

Start preparing your home and family as soon as a weather alert is issued. We will often have a little bit of preparation time before the storm hits, so take advantage of every minute.

Clean up your yard and remove any hazards that could potentially be picked up by a strong wind and turned into a projectile. Tie down belongings that can’t be moved inside like your patio furniture, grills and propane tanks.

You should also take a quick look at your gutter system, and be sure that your downspouts aren’t clogged and are pointing away from your house. After that, head inside and close your windows and doors, locking your storm shutters if you have them. Battening down the hatches can help you avoid water damage and structural damage if the wind blows debris into your windows.

During the Storm

Head for shelter while the storm is overhead, and don’t come out until you are 100% sure the threat has passed. Choose an interior room on your lowest level that is far away from windows and gather your entire family there. Don’t forget to grab your pets, your emergency kit and weather radio!

Stay tuned in to the current weather conditions and be sure the entire storm system has passed before going outside. It is important to remember that while one system has passed through, another one may be on the near horizon.

After the Storm

Depending on the severity and path of the storm, you could be dealing with some significant structural damage to your home and property. Use extreme caution when walking around your home as loose floorboards, broken nails or other hazards could be lurking just out of sight.

If your home has suffered damage that left rooms of your home exposed to the elements, lay out tarps or set out buckets to help secure your home while you are waiting for us to arrive. We will do this step more extensively when we get there, but any little bit helps.

You should also take as many photos as possible of the damage because having fresh images will help your insurance claim process go much smoother.

Our storm damage restoration team will arrive quickly to secure your home and get to work. We will remove excess water and tackle repairs right away. Our goal is to return your home to its preloss condition as quickly and as efficiently as possible. Lean on us when disaster strikes, and we will take care of you.

Strong storms can lead to serious home damage. Our team at SERVPRO of North Huntington can help you recover.

Severe Weather Planning

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

What to Think About in Severe Weather Planning

Being prepared is one of the best ways to come out ahead of the weather, and having an established family emergency plan is a smart move.

If your family already has an emergency plan in place, that’s great! Just be sure to practice and discuss your plan at the start of the various weather seasons so everyone knows exactly what to do.

If you’ve not yet created your family emergency plan, start here by taking a look at some things to take into consideration when creating it:

1. Receiving Emergency Alerts

We still have radio and television to broadcast warnings and alerts, but thanks to today’s technologies, it is very easy to receive emergency alerts and warnings on your smartphone. If you have a weather app or Google on your smartphone, you can quickly receive emergency alerts, which gives you with valuable time in severe weather situations.

2. Knowing Your Storm Shelter Options

If tornadoes are a common occurrence where you live, the lowest part of your home (i.e., the basement) is safest, but if there is no basement, you’ll want to be in the lowest part of your home in an interior room away from corners, windows, doors and outside walls. However, tornadoes aren’t the only weather circumstance that requires a form of storm shelter.

3. Knowing Evacuation Routes

Having several evacuation routes mapped out before you need them can help should a hurricane, flood or fire force you from your home in a hurry. It’s wise to have multiple routes mapped out in case one is impassable. Remember to locate places that will also allow your pets to stay with you along the way.

4. Keeping Communication Open

It is easy to rely on cell phones to keep in touch with your family, but sometimes that will not be feasible as cell communication is reliant on towers that could sustain damage during the storm.

Power could also be lost, phones could be misplaced, and if there is no power, you will not be able to recharge them when needed. Set up a safe meeting place for your family, so that you can all meet there if separated.

If a storm causes damage to your home or business, don’t hesitate to call your friends at SERVPRO of North Huntington to get the cleanup process started, 631-423-1734.

Thunderstorms can cause the following types of damage...

9/21/2020 (Permalink)

Thunderstorms can cause the following types of damage...

Hail damage. It may come as a shock, but hail damage can top out at $1 billion annually. The smaller hail can wreak havoc on crops, and larger hail can do a fair amount of damage to homes and vehicles.

Flood damage. Since rain is common with storms, it is not shocking that heavy rains can lead to flash flooding. Occurring without warning, flash floods can cause structural damage and even rip trees out of the ground.

Lightning damage. Lightning damage can be broken into two categories, fire and electrical. When lightning strikes a home, it will pass through the electrical wiring and can cause damage to any appliance that is plugged into an outlet.

Tornado damage. With wind speeds that can reach upwards of 200 mph, tornadoes are capable of causing immense amounts of damage over large areas in a limited amount of time.

If a thunderstorm has resulted in damage to your home or business, know that the team at SERVPRO of North Huntington is available 247 to help with cleanup and restoration.

How Is Lightning Damaging to a Home?

9/1/2020 (Permalink)

How Is Lightning Damaging to a Home?

Understanding how lightning strike affects a home will help you take precautions when it is a possibility.

Lightning creates shock waves. Lightning striking across a cloud produces shock waves that we know as thunder, but it can also cause these on the ground. These shock waves are powerful enough to explode cinder blocks and shatter windows, so it is wise to inspect the foundation of your home if lightning struck nearby.

Lightning can damage electronics. When it travels through a home’s wiring system, lightning can transfer its charge throughout the electrical network of the home—causing significant damage to anything plugged in. A surge protector is a good precautionary measure for protection.

Lightning can start fires. Because lightning typically strikes buildings or structures, it can often cause fires. Not only do its high temperatures have the potential for igniting a home on impact, but it can also cause severe wiring damage within the walls of the home. If your house has been struck, the fire department can perform tests to ensure the wiring is not a fire risk.

If your home or office experiences a lightning fire related dame, SERVPRO of North Huntington is always here to help! 631-423-1734

How Do Thunderstorms Form?

9/1/2020 (Permalink)

How Do Thunderstorms Form?

There are certain conditions that are necessary for a storm to develop. There must be moisture and rising unstable air, as well as a “lifting” mechanism that forces air to rise, or where warm/cold or wet/dry air bump together, causing a rising motion.

A thunderstorm’s life cycle takes three distinct stages: the developing stage, the mature stage and the dissipating stage. The mature stage is where you’ll find hail, heavy rain, strong winds, and even tornadoes occurring.

There are a estimated 16 million thunderstorms annually throughout the world. In the United States, the number of thunderstorms typically comes to approximately 100,000 per year—10% of those are considered severe.

Various Types of Damage

There are plenty of parts of a thunderstorm that can prove to be dangerous, but one of the most serious risks is the opportunity for winds to send debris flying. Wind speeds during severe thunderstorms can reach over 57 mph. This is more than enough speed to create chaos and damage to your property.

When there are strong winds, there is always a chance for non-threatening items to turn into a serious threat in projectile mode. Take some time to check on and secure items in your yard before any thunderstorms come rolling into town. These items can include tree branches, gravel, mailboxes, fencing, lawn furniture, potted plants and garbage cans.

Summer storms can cause wind damage. Roofs in particular, often suffer from wind damage. This can lead to water leaking through the roof to the interior of the home or business. These leaks are often difficult to detect until a great deal of damage has already been done. Storm and wind damage can also loosen flashing, which can cause leakage and water damage. Repairing your roof and flashing quickly and properly may help to prevent long term interior damage.

Heavy summer rains can also cause flooding. Flood pump failures contribute to basement flooding and contaminated ground water in some locations as well. Flooding may also disrupt municipal water systems. Experts will need to assess ground water and evaluate the condition of pipes following flood damage.

Ideal Conditions for a Tornado

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

The months of April and May are notorious for the highest occurrences of tornadoes at 30% and 24%, respectively. This means we are in the height of tornado season throughout the United States.

Ideal Conditions for a Tornado

The formation of a tornado occurs when changes in wind speed and direction create a horizontal spinning effect within a storm cell. This is then tipped vertical by rising air moving up through the thunderclouds.

At first look, you will not see the tornado’s signature funnel cloud because it will be transparent until water droplets from the storm’s moist air condense or when dust and debris are picked up. A typical tornado can grow to be 660 feet wide and will move at 10 to 20 miles per hour, although larger and faster tornadoes have been observed. Hail and intense winds of over 200 mph can accompany tornadoes.

Typically, tornadoes occur in the late afternoon, but it is vital to remember that they can occur at anytime and anywhere.

If your home or business has been damaged by a tornado, know that SERVPRO® of North Huntington is ready and waiting to jump into action and get cleanup and restoration of your property underway.

What to Do if There Is a Tornado

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

What to Do if There Is a Tornado

Tornadoes can take you by surprise and wreak absolute havoc on the areas they touch down in. While meteorologists and weather services can provide some advanced warning to potential threats, tornadoes can still occur with little to no warning at all.

Have you thought about the difference between a tornado watch and a warning? A watch is issued when the conditions are favorable for tornadoes, while a warning is issued when a tornado has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar.

If there has been a tornado warning issued for your area, it is important that you take action immediately to find safe shelter, especially if you are in the path of the tornado.

Shelter Options Include:

  • Underground options like a basement or storm shelter.
  • The lowest part of your home, in an area that is away from outside walls, doors and windows. Interior closets and bathrooms can be ideal options.
  • If you are outside, try to get to a sturdy building. Mobile homes and trailers are not a safe option.
  • If on the road and no building access is available, do not get under an overpass or bridge. Instead, find a low, flat location and use your arms to protect your head and neck.

It would be good if you have flashlights, a battery-powered weather radio and extra batteries available and ready to use in your selected tornado shelter at home.

When driving, if you are caught out on the road during a tornado, NEVER try to outrun it. Also, when you are taking shelter in your home, you can provide additional cover by using furniture items like couch cushions, mattresses or blankets to help keep your head and neck covered.

If your home or business has been damaged by a tornado, know that SERVPRO of North Huntington is ready and waiting to jump into action and get cleanup and restoration of your property underway.

Lightning and Thunderstorm Damages - Part 1

9/10/2019 (Permalink)

With floods, heavy rains and high winds, thunderstorms can cause damage in so many ways. One of the most dramatic of these can be through lightning, which can lead to fires, power surges and other property damages. Because a single lightning bolt can be as hot as 500,000 degrees, their strikes are often highly dangerous.

Though there is no way to prevent lightning strikes, it is important to understand the types of damage they cause in order to be aware of what to look out for.

How Is Lightning Formed?

Electricity is at the heart of every thunderstorm, which is what causes thunder and lightning. A lightning bolt is the discharge of electrical energy in a short burst, either striking across the clouds or below the ground.

Lightning attempts to reach the ground as quickly as possible because the atmosphere is such a poor conductor. Instead of traveling through the air for longer, it will typically strike an object on its way to the ground. If this object is a house or building, it will make use of the electrical wires and water pipes to get where it is going.

If your home or office has been affected by storm damages or lightning-related fires, give us a call today! SERVPRO of North Huntington are the experts in fire damage cleanup and restoration.

The difference between a tornado watch and tornado warning.

5/13/2019 (Permalink)

What to Do if There Is a Tornado

Have you thought about the difference between a tornado watch and tornado warning?

Tornadoes can take you by surprise and wreak absolute havoc on the areas they touch down in. While meteorologists and weather services can provide some advanced warning to potential threats, tornadoes can still occur with little to no warning at all.

If your home or business has been damaged by a tornado, know that SERVPRO® of North Huntington is ready and waiting to jump into action and get cleanup and restoration of your property underway.

Tornado Safety Info Everyone Should Know

5/6/2019 (Permalink)

When you know that the weather in the spring can be unpredictable, you can take steps to always be prepared for the chance of severe thunderstorms that lead to the perfect conditions for a tornado to strike.

The months of April and May are notorious for the highest occurrences of tornadoes at 30% and 24%, respectively. This means we are currently entering into the height of tornado season throughout the United States. Included in this blog are some tips and information on tornadoes that can help keep your family prepared for the worst possible scenario.

Ideal Conditions for a Tornado

There are approximately over 1,000 tornadoes that occur in the U.S. each year, and they are the product of severe thunderstorms, especially those known as “supercells.”

Severe Storms Cause Damaging Winds

11/28/2018 (Permalink)

There are many concerns that come with severe storms, with one of those being the threat of damaging winds. These winds can come with little to no notice and can cause long-term structural impacts.

Concerns About High Winds

Tornadoes and hurricanes are probably what first comes to mind when thinking about damaging winds. However, those are not the only ones to be concerned about.

Traditionally, damaging winds are those with wind speeds exceeding 50–60 mph and can be the result of a strong thunderstorm. You will commonly hear damaging winds referred to as “straight-line” winds, which differentiates from the damage from a tornado.

The damage from these winds can be especially destructive. Straight-line winds can cause loose articles to become projectiles. Windows and the roof can take a beating from straight-line winds, and if it’s extensive enough, water damage can result as the outside elements come indoors.

Anyone who lives in a thunderstorm-prone area is at risk from damaging winds. Many structures can suffer from damaging winds, but there is one structure in particular that is especially at risk. For example, even mobile homes that are anchored can become a victim of wind gusts over 80 mph.

If your home has been hit by damaging winds and resulting water damage, our highly trained specialists at SERVPRO® of North Huntington are here 247 to help with cleanup and restoration of your home.

How to Protect Your Home

There are a number of ways you can help protect your property from damaging winds. Some are listed below, but keep the “Two R’s” in mind: reinforce and remove.

  • Have your garage door reinforced by a professional.

  • Remove or anchor loose items on your property that could be blown around and tossed by the wind. This includes trash cans, grills and outdoor furniture.

  • Hire a professional to remove any large or dying trees and branches that could be blown over onto your home.

We don’t always receive advanced notice about straight-line or damaging winds. But, as we all know, being proactive with some of the above preventive items may just protect you from damage.

Also, if you are building a new home or renovating an older home, make sure that the windows, walls and doors are meet the building code for your area.
