What to Think About in Severe Weather Planning

Being prepared is one of the best ways to come out ahead of the weather, and having an established family emergency plan is a smart move.

If your family already has an emergency plan in place, that’s great. Just be sure to practice and discuss your plan at the start of the various weather seasons so everyone knows exactly what to do.

If you’ve not yet created your family emergency plan, start here by taking a look at some things to take into consideration when creating it:

1. Receiving Emergency Alerts

We still have radio and television to broadcast warnings and alerts, but thanks to today’s technologies, it is very easy to receive emergency alerts and warnings on your smartphone. If you have a weather app or Google on your smartphone, you can quickly receive emergency alerts, which gives you with valuable time in severe weather situations.

2. Knowing Your Storm Shelter Options

If tornadoes are a common occurrence where you live, the lowest part of your home (i.e., the basement) is safest, but if there is no basement, you’ll want to be in the lowest part of your home in an interior room away from corners, windows, doors and outside walls. However, tornadoes aren’t the only weather circumstance that requires a form of storm shelter, and you can visit ready.gov to learn more about these situations.

3. Knowing Evacuation Routes

Having several evacuation routes mapped out before you need them can help should a hurricane, flood or fire force you from your home in a hurry. It’s wise to have multiple routes mapped out in case one is impassable. Remember to locate places that will also allow your pets to stay with you along the way.

4. Keeping Communication Open

Your family will need an emergency communication plan in place. It is easy to rely on cell phones to keep in touch with your family, but sometimes that will not be feasible as cell communication is reliant on towers that could sustain damage during the storm.

Power could also be lost, phones could be misplaced, and if there is no power, you will not be able to recharge them when needed. Also, set up a safe meeting place for your family, so that you can all meet there if separated.

Understanding Mold and Mold Spores

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors.

It is impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Experiencing a home fire is a nightmare scenario.

For many Americans, experiencing a home fire is a nightmare scenario that has become a reality. Each year more than 350,000 house fires occur in the U.S. Fortunately, you can take steps to help protect your home from fire by learning about and watching for fire hazards within it.

The primary cause of house fires is cooking, but smoking is the primary cause of home fire deaths. An estimated 17,200 house fires were reported in 2014 due to smoking materials such as cigarettes, pipes and cigars.

There were 570 deaths, 1,140 injuries and $426 million in property damage from those fires, according to the Coalition for Fire-Safe Cigarettes.

If you smoke, it is safest to smoke outside, as most deaths resulted from fires which started in living rooms or bedrooms. Fire-safe cigarettes are the best option, and using a deep, sturdy ashtray is safest.

Candles Require Caution!

Fire and smoke damage can be devastating to homes, and in many circumstances, can be accompanied by the water damage from firefighting efforts.

Candles Require Caution

The National Fire Protection Association found that fire departments in the U.S. were called to an estimated 8,700 home structure fires a year that were started by candles during a five-year period from 2011 to 2015. These fires resulted in 82 deaths, 800 injuries and $295 million in direct property damage.

Candles were reported to have caused 2 percent of home fires, with 3 percent resulting in death and 7 percent with injuries. There were an average of 24 home candle fires reported per day during those five years, with December having the highest amount of calls for the year.

Candle fires during this time span were responsible for 37 percent of bedroom fires and 36 percent of the associated deaths and 51 percent of the associated injuries.

Things to remember when using candles:

Keep lit candles at least one foot away from flammable materials.
Always use a sturdy holder that won’t tip over.
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Don’t go to sleep with a candle burning.
Do not use candles if oxygen is being used in the home.
