Fire cleanup and restoration is something that SERVPRO of Huntington takes seriously

3/21/2022 (Permalink)

Being a leader in fire cleanup and restoration is something that SERVPRO of Huntington takes seriously. Our number one goal is returning damage to its pre loss condition, doing all we can to make it "Like it never even happened."

Here are some fire and smoke damage tips:

DO:

  • Limit movement of people in the structure to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and belongings
  • Turn off HVAC system to help limit soot and smoke from spreading throughout the structure

DON'T:

  • Attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces
  • Clean any electrical appliances
  • Turn on ceiling fans
  • Wash clothes, rugs, blankets or any other belongings. Improper cleaning can set smoke odor

What is a Puff Back?

11/1/2021 (Permalink)

What is a Puff Back?

A puff back is an explosion that forces soot and debris through the furnace or the boiler's exhaust system and into your home or business.

The good news is that most puff back cleanups are covered by insurance. Our professionals here at SERVPRO of North Huntington can walk you through the claim process step by step and make it "Like it never even happened.” In fact, our customers often tell us that their properties look and smell cleaner than before!

During a puff back event, soot typically covers most areas of the property including: drapes, bedding, furniture, clothing, cabinetry, ceilings, walls and floors, all of which is extremely difficult to remove. Soot coverage can range from a light dusting to a concentrated dark appearance especially on flat surfaces like counter tops. While you may be tempted to clean the affected area yourself, we don’t recommend it. The soot will settle and re-appear hours afterwards and can cause additional damage. Don’t be fooled that the dust/soot is only where you see it. It travels everywhere that the air does—into every nook and cranny. Sometimes you will find what you think are black “spider webs” in the corners of a room. These marks are actually a collection of the sticky soot.

At SERVPRO of North Huntington, we have the appropriate equipment, knowledge and experience to properly get the job done. We are here to help!

There are different types of water that can cause damage to your home.

10/4/2021 (Permalink)

There are different types of water that can cause damage to your home.

SERVPRO of North Huntington approaches and handles each water damage accordingly. Regardless of the type of water that has caused the damage, there is always a process of cleanup and restoration that we follow. Our first step is always to remove the moisture and damp items so that mold will not begin to grow.

Below are three different types of water that can cause damage:

Clean Water

Much like its name, water that is free of contaminants is considered “clean” and not the type to pose an immediate threat to your health. Examples of clean water include: broken water lines, appliances, toilet tanks etc.

Gray Water

In gray water, there were be a slight amount of contaminants, and water damage cleanup and restoration from this type of water becomes a bit more complicated. It can pose a health risk, due to the fact that it will contain chemical or biological contamination. Examples of gray water include: dishwashers, aquariums, showers, etc. Gray water can turn into black water if not treated.

Black Water

Black water can be a very serious matter and the most hazardous of the three classifications because it is considered highly contaminated by harmful chemicals and biological matter. Examples of black water include: floodwaters containing soil and all sewage waters.

Heat Your Home Safely and Avoid a Fire Damage!

Tips on how to safely heat your home:

  • Be sure that your smoke detectors are installed properly. They should be tested regularly to ensure they are working properly.
  • Heating  equipment not being used improperly is the leading cause of home fire deaths. If you use a space heater, keep it away from anything flammable including: bedding, mattresses, clothing, and upholstered furniture.
  • Make sure children and animals stay away from space heaters and fireplaces.
  • Turn portable heaters off when you leave the room or go to sleep.
  • Always use a screen in front of your fireplace and have your chimney professionally cleaned annually. Douse any fire or coals before you go to sleep or if you leave the house.
  • Never heat your home with your stove or oven.

4/19/2021 (Permalink)

The following are a few of the most common misconceptions about mold:

1) Mold is safe to clean myself

No matter what type of mold you think you have, it is always important to take precautionary measures. Because mold releases spores, the cleaning process can increase the amount of spores in the air exponentially. It is best to hire professionals, like SERVPRO of North Huntington. We are licensed and trained in mold removal and remediation.

2) This mold isn’t black mold, so it isn’t harmful

The color of mold does not always indicate its toxicity. Mold can colonize in various colors such as brown, green, white and yellow as well as black. Any significant colony of mold can create increased levels of spores present in the air.

3) I’ve cleaned with bleach, so the problem is fixed

Watered down bleach solution is not an effective solution. The use of professional cleaning solutions and professional cleaning methods used by SERVPRO of North Huntingtin will ensure the best results.

Mold and The Spring Season

4/5/2021 (Permalink)

Mold and the Spring Season

The Spring season is upon us and with the season's warmer weather we often open up our windows and take on the task of spring cleaning. One step people might not think of is to check for excess moisture that could lead to mold growth and to also take steps to prevent mold from becoming a problem. Remember, the key to mold control is moisture control.

Mold can grow on any surface where excessive moisture and oxygen are present. If mold remains undiscovered or unaddressed, the damage can become extensive and very costly. It can also negatively impact the indoor air quality of your home or office.

If you suspect that you have a mold issue in your home or office, SERVPRO of North Huntington is here to help and we are only a phone call away,   631-423-1734.

When Spring arrives, will your home and office be dry?

Now that winter weather is passing, it is the best time to inspect your home or office building for weather related damage. Snow and ice buildup, heavy rains and strong winds can all cause problems with your property. Roofs, gutters and landscapes are exterior elements that should be checked to guard against water damage. Remember to look in attics, basements or crawl spaces for visible signs of water intrusion. Make sure outside vents are clear of any obstruction to ensure proper air flow.

Being a leader in fire cleanup and restoration is something that SERVPRO of North Huntington takes seriously. Our number one goal is returning damage to its pre loss condition, doing all we can to make it "Like it never even happened."

Here are some fire and smoke damage tips:

DO:

  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and belongings
  • Turn off HVAC system to help limit soot and smoke from spreading throughout the structure

DON'T:

  • Attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces
  • Clean any electrical appliances
  • Turn on ceiling fans
  • Wash clothes, rugs, blankets or any other belongings. Improper cleaning can set smoke odor

Spring, We Welcome You!

Spring, We Welcome You!

We may not be able to predict the weather with 100% accuracy, but fortunately, forecasters have the technology and the tools available to at least give us fair warning of an impending severe weather event. Advanced warnings, along with the right preparation, can greatly improve overall safety for your family.

Here are some tips you can use to help prepare your home for severe weather:

  1. Clear out your home’s gutters, drains and downspouts.
  2. Trim trees of precarious limbs or branches that could break off in a storm.
  3. Secure or store outdoor belongs if severe weather is in the forecast.

Also, having an emergency kit on hand is always advised. These kits should include the following:

  • Battery-operated flashlight and NOAA weather radio, with extra batteries for both
  • Emergency evacuation or shelter plans
  • Important personal info, like telephone numbers of neighbors, family and friends, insurance and property info, numbers for the utility companies, and medical info
  • A first -aid kit with things like non-latex gloves, adhesive bandages, tweezers, sterile gauze pads, aspirin packets, adhesive cloth tape and scissors
  • 3–5 day supply of bottled water and nonperishable food
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Blankets or sleeping bag

Despite its unpredictability, there is one thing that always remains true of the spring weather season: It always happens. If your home or business is damaged in a storm, you can depend on SERVPRO of North Huntington to get the cleanup and restoration process started fast.

Why a Fast Response Matters

It only takes a matter of minutes for water to affect the walls, the floors, upholstery and your belongings within your property, it will saturate everything in its path.

The effects of water damage within the first 24 hours include:

The damage continues to worsen as time goes on. Between 48 hours and a week later, you could begin to see:

  • The growth and spreading of mold and mildew
  • Swelling and warping of doors, windows and studs
  • Metal beginning to rust and corrode
  • Paint beginning to blister
  • Wood flooring swelling and warping

Ways You Can Safeguard Your Home Against Water Damage

2/4/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage is a common issue for homeowners to deal with, but there are ways you can safeguard your home.

Make it a point to regularly:

  • Inspect all appliances for issues with hoses and faucets
  • Check the seals and caulking around your showers and tubs to make sure there is no leakage
  • Know where the main water shut-off valve is in your home
  • Don’t leave your washing machine or dishwasher running when you are not home

There are also things you can do to protect the possessions in your home from water damage. Use waterproof bins to store items and keep items stored on shelves off of the floor—which is especially recommended when using your basement for storage.

Anything from a burst pipe to a malfunctioning dishwasher or storm damage are just some of the ways water damage could affect your home. Should you experience a water damage, SERVPRO of North Huntington is always here to help and are only a phone call away!

Initial Steps to Take After a Water Damage

How does a puff back happen?

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of North Huntington is open and here to help with your puff back cleanup 24/7! Call us today, 631-423-1734

How Does a Puff Back Happen?

A puff back happens when an oil burner doesn't immediately ignite and oil fumes are allowed to build up before ignition. This results in an explosion similar to what happens when a car backfires.  It may also occur from a buildup of debris, causing an explosion when the furnace turns on.  In either case, the explosion forces soot and debris through the furnace or the boiler's exhaust system and into your home or business.  The problem is worse with forced hot air systems as the heating ducts spread black soot into every corner of your home, with the same efficiency that they spread heat throughout your property.

Fact #1: Most puff back cleanups are covered by insurance. The professionals at SERVPRO of North Huntington can walk you through the claim process step by step and make it "Like it never even happened.” In fact, our customers often tell us that their properties look and smell cleaner than it ever did before!

During a puff back event, oil based soot typically covers all areas of the property including drapes, bedding, furniture, clothing, cabinetry, ceilings, walls and floors, all of which is extremely difficult to remove. In most instances, you will know that you’ve had a puff back! But there may be times when it is harder to detect because the soot coverage can range from a light dusting to a concentrated dark appearance especially on flat surfaces like counter tops. While you may be tempted to clean the affected area yourself, we don’t recommend you do that as the "dust" will likely re-appear hours afterwards. There may or may be a strong odor in the affected rooms.  Don’t be fooled that the dust is only where you see it. It travels everywhere that the air does—into every nook and cranny. Sometimes you will find what you think are black “spider webs” in the corners of a room. These marks are actually a collection of the sticky soot. At SERVPRO of North Huntington, we have the appropriate equipment, knowledge, experience and training to properly get the job done.

Fact # 2: The cost to repair a furnace will NOT likely be covered by insurance.

Puff backs create an unhealthy environment for everyone and you should not touch or breathe the soot or particles that are floating through the air and landing on the surfaces of your property.

Fact #3: Most oil companies can inspect and service the boiler at your property, which greatly reduces the chances of a puff back. However, there is no guarantee against such an occurrence.

If you have experienced a puff back in your home or business, contact SERVPRO of North Huntington today, 631-423-1734.

Severe Weather Planning

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

What to Think About in Severe Weather Planning

Being prepared is one of the best ways to come out ahead of the weather, and having an established family emergency plan is a smart move.

If your family already has an emergency plan in place, that’s great! Just be sure to practice and discuss your plan at the start of the various weather seasons so everyone knows exactly what to do.

If you’ve not yet created your family emergency plan, start here by taking a look at some things to take into consideration when creating it:

1. Receiving Emergency Alerts

We still have radio and television to broadcast warnings and alerts, but thanks to today’s technologies, it is very easy to receive emergency alerts and warnings on your smartphone. If you have a weather app or Google on your smartphone, you can quickly receive emergency alerts, which gives you with valuable time in severe weather situations.

2. Knowing Your Storm Shelter Options

If tornadoes are a common occurrence where you live, the lowest part of your home (i.e., the basement) is safest, but if there is no basement, you’ll want to be in the lowest part of your home in an interior room away from corners, windows, doors and outside walls. However, tornadoes aren’t the only weather circumstance that requires a form of storm shelter.

3. Knowing Evacuation Routes

Having several evacuation routes mapped out before you need them can help should a hurricane, flood or fire force you from your home in a hurry. It’s wise to have multiple routes mapped out in case one is impassable. Remember to locate places that will also allow your pets to stay with you along the way.

4. Keeping Communication Open

It is easy to rely on cell phones to keep in touch with your family, but sometimes that will not be feasible as cell communication is reliant on towers that could sustain damage during the storm.

Power could also be lost, phones could be misplaced, and if there is no power, you will not be able to recharge them when needed. Set up a safe meeting place for your family, so that you can all meet there if separated.

If a storm causes damage to your home or business, don’t hesitate to call your friends at SERVPRO of North Huntington to get the cleanup process started, 631-423-1734.

Water damages often manifest in covert areas of a home or business.

10/28/2020 (Permalink)

If your home or office has suffered a water damage, SERVPRO of North Huntington is here to help! Call us today-631-423-1734

Water damages often manifest in covert areas of a home or business.

Where Water Damage Can Hide:

  • Below windows. The exterior seal of a window and wall can become weathered, allowing water to seep into the wall unnoticed.

  • Behind siding. Siding panels overlap at various points around the house, which are where they can be susceptible to leaking.

  • Below thresholds. Most thresholds have a metal plate at their base, but these are not typically sealed against the elements. If the door is often exposed to weathering, water can eventually seep through to the wood.

  • Under exterior paint. Windowsills and deck railings are often painted repeatedly, which creates small gaps that water can seep through.

  • Behind the dishwasher. The dishwasher’s cubby is rarely inspected, and can harbor water damage from leaky seals or hoses.

  • Inside the walls. Water pipes that are leaky can cause water to seep into the walls, especially near sinks and tubs.

  • Under an unsteady toilet. The seal around the base of a toilet can begin to leak, often going unnoticed until the floor becomes unsteady due to the damage.

If your home or office has suffered water damage (even in a hidden place like one of these), SERVPRO of North Huntington is happy to help!

Tips on How to Heat Your Home Safely:

10/5/2020 (Permalink)

Tips on How to Heat Your Home Safely:

  • If you use a space heater, keep it at least three feet away from anything flammable including: bedding, mattresses, clothing, and upholstered furniture. Heating  equipment not being used properly is the leading cause of home fire deaths.
  • Make sure children and animals stay away from space heaters and fireplaces.
  • Turn portable heaters off when you leave the room or go to sleep. Don't keep them on all night.
  • Always use a screen in front of your fireplace and have your chimney professionally cleaned annually. Douse any fire or coals before you go to sleep or if you leave the house.
  • Never heat your home with your stove or oven.
  • Be sure that your smoke detectors are installed properly and tested to ensure they are working properly.

Thunderstorms can cause the following types of damage...

9/21/2020 (Permalink)

Thunderstorms can cause the following types of damage...

Hail damage. It may come as a shock, but hail damage can top out at $1 billion annually. The smaller hail can wreak havoc on crops, and larger hail can do a fair amount of damage to homes and vehicles.

Flood damage. Since rain is common with storms, it is not shocking that heavy rains can lead to flash flooding. Occurring without warning, flash floods can cause structural damage and even rip trees out of the ground.

Lightning damage. Lightning damage can be broken into two categories, fire and electrical. When lightning strikes a home, it will pass through the electrical wiring and can cause damage to any appliance that is plugged into an outlet.

Tornado damage. With wind speeds that can reach upwards of 200 mph, tornadoes are capable of causing immense amounts of damage over large areas in a limited amount of time.

If a thunderstorm has resulted in damage to your home or business, know that the team at SERVPRO of North Huntington is available 247 to help with cleanup and restoration.

How Is Lightning Damaging to a Home?

9/1/2020 (Permalink)

How Is Lightning Damaging to a Home?

Understanding how lightning strike affects a home will help you take precautions when it is a possibility.

Lightning creates shock waves. Lightning striking across a cloud produces shock waves that we know as thunder, but it can also cause these on the ground. These shock waves are powerful enough to explode cinder blocks and shatter windows, so it is wise to inspect the foundation of your home if lightning struck nearby.

Lightning can damage electronics. When it travels through a home’s wiring system, lightning can transfer its charge throughout the electrical network of the home—causing significant damage to anything plugged in. A surge protector is a good precautionary measure for protection.

Lightning can start fires. Because lightning typically strikes buildings or structures, it can often cause fires. Not only do its high temperatures have the potential for igniting a home on impact, but it can also cause severe wiring damage within the walls of the home. If your house has been struck, the fire department can perform tests to ensure the wiring is not a fire risk.

If your home or office experiences a lightning fire related dame, SERVPRO of North Huntington is always here to help! 631-423-1734

How Do Thunderstorms Form?

9/1/2020 (Permalink)

How Do Thunderstorms Form?

There are certain conditions that are necessary for a storm to develop. There must be moisture and rising unstable air, as well as a “lifting” mechanism that forces air to rise, or where warm/cold or wet/dry air bump together, causing a rising motion.

A thunderstorm’s life cycle takes three distinct stages: the developing stage, the mature stage and the dissipating stage. The mature stage is where you’ll find hail, heavy rain, strong winds, and even tornadoes occurring.

There are a estimated 16 million thunderstorms annually throughout the world. In the United States, the number of thunderstorms typically comes to approximately 100,000 per year—10% of those are considered severe.

Various Types of Damage

There are plenty of parts of a thunderstorm that can prove to be dangerous, but one of the most serious risks is the opportunity for winds to send debris flying. Wind speeds during severe thunderstorms can reach over 57 mph. This is more than enough speed to create chaos and damage to your property.

When there are strong winds, there is always a chance for non-threatening items to turn into a serious threat in projectile mode. Take some time to check on and secure items in your yard before any thunderstorms come rolling into town. These items can include tree branches, gravel, mailboxes, fencing, lawn furniture, potted plants and garbage cans.

SERVPRO of North Huntington is here to help with your storm damage cleanup and restoration needs.

7/24/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of North Huntington is here to help with your storm damage cleanup and restoration needs.

Summer storms can cause wind damage. Roofs in particular, often suffer from wind damage. This can lead to water leaking through the roof to the interior of the home or business. These leaks are often difficult to detect until a great deal of damage has already been done. Storm and wind damage can also loosen flashing, which can cause leakage and water damage. Repairing your roof and flashing quickly and properly may help to prevent long term interior damage.

Heavy summer rains can also cause flooding. Flood pump failures contribute to basement flooding and contaminated ground water in some locations as well. Flooding may also disrupt municipal water systems. Experts will need to assess ground water and evaluate the condition of pipes following flood damage.

Tips to help prepare you in case of a water damage.

7/20/2020 (Permalink)

5 easy tips to help prepare you in case of a water damage:

  1. Check your insurance coverage. Most renter’s or homeowners insurance policies do not cover flooding, or even a sewer backup. Find out what coverage you do have.
  2. Keep a record of all of your belongings. Take photos and keep copies of receipts and other documents for more valuable items. Keep a copy of these records online, in a waterproof safe or at another location. If you do experience water damage, it can be easy to forget about certain belongings.
  3. Take precautions to limit the risk of water damage on your property by frequently checking pipes for leaks or weakness. Pay attention to any indicators that there might be water damage. These can be the sounds of dripping water in the walls, dark spots on the ceiling, or a significant change in your water bill.
  4. Set your home or business up so that it is at less risk of damage from heavy rains or flooding by ensuring that your roof is sound. Make sure there are no cracks in the foundation. Check that the landscaping around your property is sloped to direct water away from your foundation, rather than toward it.
  5. Find a professional, like SERVPRO of North Huntington, that you can trust and have their contact information handy.

Mold warning signs that you shouldn't ignore.

7/20/2020 (Permalink)

Here are three mold warning signs that you shouldn't ignore:

1) Water spots

Any wet spot in your home can be a potential sign of mold growth. This may include water spots on your ceilings or walls, or on floors in your basement or crawlspace. If you find evidence of water spots, you need to find the source of moisture and have it taken care of immediately.

2) Discoloration

If you find a spot on a wall or floor that's discolored, it is a potential sign of mold. Discoloration that is green or black is a definite warning sign of mold growth. However, any discoloration can mean growth is present, even if it isn't of the tell-tale colors.

3) Bad smell

If you have mold growth in your home, it may cause a bad smell. Depending on the type and how much of it you have, it could be a very faint smell or it could be completely overwhelming. It can smell musty or earthy, or produce a more pungent odor. Any bad smell needs to be investigated and addressed.

Mold is not something to be ignored. If you experience any of the warning signs above, call the experts here at SERVPRO of North Huntington. Our trained and certified team is here to help. We have state of the art equipment and techniques to carry out mold remediation tasks of any size to keep your home safe and clean.

Restoration After a Fire or Smoke Damage

Every fire damage event is different, and while our highly trained team can come up with a unique solution that is tailored to your needs, the general process remains the same.

Knowing what to do after a fire or smoke damage is stressful, but that’s where we come in. Once you contact us, our team will spring into action.

Here are the steps that are included in our process:

1. Emergency contact. When you make your initial contact with us, you will be asked a series of questions regarding the fire damage. This helps us make sure our team is dispatched with the appropriate equipment and resources.

2. Inspection and fire damage assessment. Once on the scene, the team will inspect and test adjoining rooms of the property to determine the extent of damage caused by fire, smoke and soot. This helps us determine the right plan of action moving forward.

3. Immediate board-up and roof-tarp service. There’s a pretty good possibility your window, walls and roofs will be compromised by fire damage, so we will make sure that your property is secure and protected from further damage by boarding up missing windows and walls and placing a tarp on damaged roofs.

4. Water removal and drying (if water damage is present). Fires also generally bring water damage. We begin the removal process, getting all wet items out of the structure right away. We bring in dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and finish up the drying process.

5. Removal of smoke and soot from all surfaces. Through the use of specialized equipment and techniques, we are able to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls and other surfaces.

6. Cleaning and sanitizing. We will clean restorable items and structures when it is possible. Not only will they be cleaned, but we engage the use of industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment to help remove odors.

7. Restoration. The final step in getting your property back to pre-fire condition is restoration. This can include minor repairs like replacing drywall, painting and installing new carpet, as well as possible major repairs like reconstruction of damaged areas.

Remember, if you need us, we’ll be there—no matter the time or day. The team of highly trained restoration experts at SERVPRO of North Huntington is available for emergency cleanup and restoration services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Why Does My Carpet Smell?

7/6/2020 (Permalink)

Why Does My Carpet Smell?

Whether from a dripping towel, a spilled cup, or condensation dripping off of a water pipe, if your carpets get wet and are not dried quickly, they may start to smell. If the water and moisture in the carpet are not able to evaporate quickly and dry out, then it may become musty and smelly. The musty smell from your carpet is a strong indicator that mold or mildew is growing within it. If it is not treated, it can lead to premature decay and deterioration of your carpet and sub floor.

Call the Professionals

The most effective way to get rid of carpet odors from water damage is to contact SERVPRO of North Huntington. We have the tools, the technicians and the equipment to extract the water, dry and dehumidify, and to remove the odors from your carpet, carpet pads, sub floors, drywall, and framing. If you've tried everything to get rid of the odors and they keep coming back, give us a call. We are here to help with all of your water damage cleanup and restoration needs, 631-423-1734.

  • Large homes may need extra smoke alarms.
  • It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds they all sound.
  • Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
  • Today’s smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, yet mitigate false alarms.
  • A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high on a wall. Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms. They should be at least 10 feet (3 meters) from the stove.
  • People who are hard-of-hearing or deaf use special alarms. These alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers.

Ideal Conditions for a Tornado

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

The months of April and May are notorious for the highest occurrences of tornadoes at 30% and 24%, respectively. This means we are in the height of tornado season throughout the United States.

Ideal Conditions for a Tornado

The formation of a tornado occurs when changes in wind speed and direction create a horizontal spinning effect within a storm cell. This is then tipped vertical by rising air moving up through the thunderclouds.

At first look, you will not see the tornado’s signature funnel cloud because it will be transparent until water droplets from the storm’s moist air condense or when dust and debris are picked up. A typical tornado can grow to be 660 feet wide and will move at 10 to 20 miles per hour, although larger and faster tornadoes have been observed. Hail and intense winds of over 200 mph can accompany tornadoes.

Typically, tornadoes occur in the late afternoon, but it is vital to remember that they can occur at anytime and anywhere.

If your home or business has been damaged by a tornado, know that SERVPRO® of North Huntington is ready and waiting to jump into action and get cleanup and restoration of your property underway.

Is Your Business Emergency Ready?

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

There are various matters and tasks that must be taken care of while running a business, but one of the most important tasks to think about is emergency preparedness.

While having a plan in place is not insurance against having a disaster of some sort occur, it can still give your business a leg up where safety is concerned and at least ensure that your employees will know what to do if a disaster or emergency situation should occur.

Making a Plan

There are numerous emergencies your business should have a plan in place for, including:

  • Fire
  • Severe weather, including thunderstorms and winter storms
  • Other natural hazards like floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes
  • Human-caused hazards, including accidents or acts of violence
  • Technology-related issues like power outages and equipment failure

Emergencies come in many shapes and forms, and it doesn’t matter if one is man-made or natural. Where there is no emergency plan for a business, you can be sure things will get chaotic quickly.

Where to Start

Consider which scenarios are most likely to occur and even those that you feel are a long shot but could still happen. After all, it’s better to be over-prepared for any worst-case scenario and not be caught off guard.

You will find plenty of online resources to help guide you through this process, including Ready.gov, the American Red Cross, FEMA and the CDC.

Be sure to review and practice the plan with your employees. Reviewing and rehearsing various scenarios can help ensure the process remains fresh in their minds and can help employees feel more empowered.

Disaster can strike when you least expect it, but by being prepared and having a plan in place, your business will be better suited to handle whatever Mother Nature has in store. If the worst should happen and your business is damaged, know that SERVPRO® of North Huntington is here to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

What to Do if There Is a Tornado

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

What to Do if There Is a Tornado

Tornadoes can take you by surprise and wreak absolute havoc on the areas they touch down in. While meteorologists and weather services can provide some advanced warning to potential threats, tornadoes can still occur with little to no warning at all.

Have you thought about the difference between a tornado watch and a warning? A watch is issued when the conditions are favorable for tornadoes, while a warning is issued when a tornado has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar.

If there has been a tornado warning issued for your area, it is important that you take action immediately to find safe shelter, especially if you are in the path of the tornado.

Shelter Options Include:

  • Underground options like a basement or storm shelter.
  • The lowest part of your home, in an area that is away from outside walls, doors and windows. Interior closets and bathrooms can be ideal options.
  • If you are outside, try to get to a sturdy building. Mobile homes and trailers are not a safe option.
  • If on the road and no building access is available, do not get under an overpass or bridge. Instead, find a low, flat location and use your arms to protect your head and neck.

It would be good if you have flashlights, a battery-powered weather radio and extra batteries available and ready to use in your selected tornado shelter at home.

When driving, if you are caught out on the road during a tornado, NEVER try to outrun it. Also, when you are taking shelter in your home, you can provide additional cover by using furniture items like couch cushions, mattresses or blankets to help keep your head and neck covered.

If your home or business has been damaged by a tornado, know that SERVPRO of North Huntington is ready and waiting to jump into action and get cleanup and restoration of your property underway.

Mold Misconceptions

4/28/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of North Huntington makes mold damage "Like it never even happened."

Following are a few of the most common misconceptions about mold:

The use of professional grade cleaning solutions and professional cleaning methods used by SERVPRO of North Huntington will ensure the best results.

Mold, mold, mold - We hear it all the time

3/16/2020 (Permalink)

The Good Stuff

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment and some produce some very useful results. Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages.  The unique flavor of bleu cheese is a result of mold.  An edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi, and lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold.

The Bad Stuff

Mold exists in every household, no matter how spotless you keep it. It’s a natural part of the air in any home. Mold becomes a problem if it can grow and spread and it can cause health effects.

Things to be aware of…

Appearance

Do you see mold? It can vary in color.

 Odor

Do you smell mold? Mold has a particular musty, earthy smell. If you smell something not quite right near an area that is prone to dampness and constant moisture, you may be smelling mold.

Different Types of Water - Clean, Gray & Black

3/3/2020 (Permalink)

There are different types of water that cause damage to your home or business. SERVPRO of North Huntington approaches and handles each water damage accordingly.

Regardless of the type of water that has caused the damage, there is always going to be a process of cleanup and restoration that we follow. We must first remove all of the moisture and damp items so that mold will not begin to grow.

Clean Water

Much like its name, water that is free of contaminants is considered “clean” and not the type to pose an immediate threat to your health. Examples of clean water types would be water from: broken water lines, appliances, toilet tanks etc.

Gray Water

In gray water, there were be a slight amount of contaminants, and water damage cleanup and restoration from this type of water becomes a bit more complicated. It may pose a health risk, due to the fact that it will contain chemical or biological contamination.

Gray water will likely be the type of water that comes from: dishwashers, aquariums, showers, etc. Gray water can turn into black water if not treated.

Black Water

Black water is a serious matter and the most hazardous of the three classifications because it is considered highly contaminated by harmful chemicals and biological matter. This type of water includes: floodwaters containing soil and all sewage waters.

Standards of the IICRC

3/2/2020 (Permalink)

The water damage cleanup and restoration field changes. Advancements in technology and science, force the standards to evolve to keep pace. This is why the IICRC,Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification, is so important to our industry. Every five years, the standards of the IICRC, are reviewed and updated accordingly.

IICRC Certified Firms Must:

• Require a technician on all jobs who has been formally trained and passed all required tests

• Continue with current education programs to keep technicians up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry

• Maintain liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident

• Present accurate information to consumers and conduct business with honesty and integrity

SERVPRO of North Huntington is proud to be an Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) Certified Firm.

Water Damage Recovery

2/25/2020 (Permalink)

The first steps after a water damage occurs are contacting your insurance company and then your plumber for repair. Next, call the experts at SERVPRO of North Huntington, who are available 24/7 for your emergency needs! We will determine the type of water that has affected your home and start the cleanup and restoration process accordingly. Following a water damage, all affected materials and content will need to be removed or properly dried and disinfected.

Severe Weather Planning

1/24/2020 (Permalink)

Severe Weather Planning

If your family already has a severe weather plan in place, that’s great! Just be sure to practice and discuss your plan at the start of the various weather seasons so everyone knows exactly what to do.

If you’ve not yet created one, start here by taking a look at some things to take into consideration when creating it:

1. Emergency Alerts

If you have a weather app or Google on your smartphone, you can quickly receive emergency alerts, which gives you with valuable time in severe weather situations. We still have radio and television to broadcast warnings and alerts too.

2. Evacuation Routes

Have several evacuation routes mapped out before you need them will help should a hurricane, flood or fire force you from your home in a hurry. It’s wise to have multiple routes mapped out in case one is impassable.

3. Storm Shelter Options

Know your local storm shelter locations and options to avoid confusion and panic.

4. Safe Place to Meet

Power could be lost, phones could be misplaced, and if there is no power, you will not be able to recharge them when needed. Set up a safe meeting place for your family, so that you can all meet there if separated.

Mold Spores Are Microscopic

1/3/2020 (Permalink)

Mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. It is impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.

IICRC - Institute of Inspection, Cleaning & Restoration Certification

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

Only IICRC Certified Firms have the right to display the IICRC Certified Logo. SERVPRO of North Huntington displays the logo proudly. Insurance Claims & Water Damage

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

Water Damage

Many of us will face a water damage in our home at some point, as it is the third most common reason that homeowners file insurance claims.

Understanding the different types of water damage and how they can impact insurance claims is important. For example, if there are things that have been happening over time, such as plumbing issues behind the walls that have now caused visible damage to the walls, ceilings or floors, or water damage caused by cracks in the foundation, there might be a coverage issue. Don't let this stop you from moving forward with making a claim. Contact SERVPRO of North Huntington for a detailed in home assessment. We can even work directly with your insurance company in most cases!

Commom Causes of Water Damage

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

Water Damage Common Causes

  • Washing machine failures. Machines overflowing, supply hose failures and drain line failures are typically the causes of washing machine failures and are one of the top 10 sources of residential water losses.
  • Toilet failures. Toilets are the second highest source of residential water loss after plumbing supply systems. Anything from faulty fill valves or clogged drain lines can cause toilets to malfunction and cause water damage.
  • Plumbing supply system failures. This happens when frozen pipes burst due to the buildup in water pressure caused by freezing water or when the supply system material fails resulting in a leaking or bursting pipes.

  • Plumbing drain system failures. This situation occurs when sewer drains back up and overflow into a home or from construction material performance issues.

  • Water heater failures. Water heaters reaching or passing their life expectancy begin to rust and corrode, which can result in leaking or bursting issues.

House Fires Caused by Candles

11/25/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of North Huntington will make your Fire Damage "Like it never even happened."

As much as you might love lighting up a candle, consider this: Between 2009 and 2013, candles were responsible for 9,300 home fires. This caused $374 million in property damage in the U.S. About a third of these fires started in the bedroom, and half of them were simply because something was left too close to the flame and caught fire.

How to Reduce Candle Fires:

  • Always blow out candles when you leave the room or go to sleep.
  • Never leave kids alone in a room with a burning candle.
  • Keep candles away from anything that's flammable.
  • Consider using flameless, battery operated candles. You can get ones that are scented!
  • Use flashlights instead of candles if your power goes out.

No one ever thinks they will be the victim of a house fire. Making a few small changes can help to keep your family and your home safe.

We are here to help with fire, smoke and soot damage.

11/25/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of North Huntington is always here to help should you experience fire, smoke or soot damage.

For many Americans, experiencing a home fire is a nightmare scenario that has become a reality. Each year more than 350,000 house fires occur in the U.S. Fortunately, you can take steps to help protect your home from fire by learning about and watching for fire hazards within it. The primary cause of house fires is cooking, but smoking is the smoking is the primary cause of home fire deaths. Here are a few tips to help keep you safe:

  • When cooking, always stay in the kitchen or by the grill.
  • Keep a metal lid handy to smother grease fires - never put water on a grease fire, it will explode!
  • Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen.
  • If you smoke, do it outside.
  • Remain alert when you're smoking - smoking while sleepy or under the influence is not safe!

Protect your property from storm related damaging winds.

11/1/2019 (Permalink)

There are a number of ways you can help protect your property from storm related damaging winds. Some are listed below, but keep the “Two R’s” in mind: reinforce and remove.

  • Hire a professional to remove any large or dying trees and branches that could be blown over onto your home.

  • Remove or anchor loose items on your property that could be blown around and tossed by the wind. This includes trash cans, grills and outdoor furniture.

  • Have your garage door reinforced by a professional.

We don’t always receive advanced notice about straight-line or damaging winds. But, as we all know, being proactive with some of the above preventive items may help to protect you from damage. As always, SERVPRO of North Huntington is only a phone call away should you need us!

Hiding Spots Where Water Can Accumulate

10/28/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage can happen at any time. SERVPRO of North Huntington will ensure that the cleanup and restoration is done right!

There are a variety of reasons water damage can occur, and they can often manifest in covert areas of a home or business.

The complications that come with discovering water damage are compounded by its cost. There are many insurance policies that do not accept water damage claims, but for the ones that do, the typical claim is well above $6,000. Being aware of the hidden spots water where water damage can accumulate is wise for home and business owners so they can get ahead of the issues.

Where Water Damage Can Hide

Give us a call

Heating Your Home Safely

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of North Huntington is here to help if your home experiences a fire damage.

Most home heating fires occur on winter evenings. Space heaters cause two of every five fires and another one third are caused by fireplaces or chimneys.

How to Heat Your Home Safely:

  • If you use a space heater, keep it at least three feet away from anything flammable including: bedding, mattresses, clothing, and upholstered furniture - that's the biggest factor in fire heating deaths.
  • Make sure children stay away from space heaters and fireplaces.
  • Turn portable heaters off when you leave the room or go to sleep. Don't keep them on all night.
  • Always use a screen in front of your fireplace and have your chimney professionally cleaned annually. Douse any fire or coals before you go to sleep or if you leave the house.
  • Never heat your home with your oven.

Lightning and Thunderstorm Damages - Part 2

9/17/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of North Huntington is here to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for your emergency needs!

How Is Lightning Damaging to a Home?

Understanding how a lightning strike affects a home will help you take precautions when it is a possibility.

Lightning can damage electronics. When it travels through a home’s wiring system, lightning can transfer its charge throughout the electrical network of the home—causing significant damage to anything plugged in. A surge protector is a good precautionary measure for protection.

If your home or office experiences a lightning fire related dame, SERVPRO of North Huntington is always here to help!

Lightning and Thunderstorm Damages - Part 1

9/10/2019 (Permalink)

With floods, heavy rains and high winds, thunderstorms can cause damage in so many ways. One of the most dramatic of these can be through lightning, which can lead to fires, power surges and other property damages. Because a single lightning bolt can be as hot as 500,000 degrees, their strikes are often highly dangerous.

Though there is no way to prevent lightning strikes, it is important to understand the types of damage they cause in order to be aware of what to look out for.

How Is Lightning Formed?

Electricity is at the heart of every thunderstorm, which is what causes thunder and lightning. A lightning bolt is the discharge of electrical energy in a short burst, either striking across the clouds or below the ground.

Lightning attempts to reach the ground as quickly as possible because the atmosphere is such a poor conductor. Instead of traveling through the air for longer, it will typically strike an object on its way to the ground. If this object is a house or building, it will make use of the electrical wires and water pipes to get where it is going.

If your home or office has been affected by storm damages or lightning-related fires, give us a call today! SERVPRO of North Huntington are the experts in fire damage cleanup and restoration.

How to Prevent House Fires

8/7/2019 (Permalink)

Understanding the dangers and prevention methods for house fires is essential for avoiding the costly damage they can cause.

Naturally, the best method to stay safe against house fires is through keeping smoke alarms operational, but there are many other ways homeowners can avoid a fire starting around the house.

The Frequency of House Fires

Many people do not fully grasp the risk house fires can pose and how often they occur. The National Fire Protection Association reports that every 24 seconds, a house fire occurs, meaning there are a shocking number of fires each day.

Cooking is the leading cause of house fires, but there are many other causes that can spark a flame.

Steps to Prevent House Fires

Because fire is so powerful, one simple mistake can lead to a full-on house fire if one is not careful. The best thing to do is to learn about house fire prevention steps to keep flames at bay:

Test smoke alarms. Though the hope is that one will never have to use a smoke alarm, it is important that they are working in case the need arises. Perform monthly battery checks and replace them every 10 years.

Prevent dryer lint buildup. Dryer trays can hold an excessive amount of lint, which provides the perfect combustible material if allowed to collect. After each load, clean out the tray to avoid combustion from the dryer’s heat.

Keep an eye on flames. Because most of us use flames every day for candles, cooking and more, it can be easy to forget the risk they can cause. It is best to not leave flames unattended.

Keep cables in good condition. Electrical cables and household wires should be inspected frequently and replaced if fraying is found.

Protect household supplies. Because many household supplies contain flammable materials and come in aerosol cans, it is best to keep these products away from heat sources or direct sunlight.

If your home has suffered damage from a house fire, give us a call. We are certified in fire and soot remediation, and here to help 247.

The Potential For Water Damage At Home

7/25/2019 (Permalink)

Water—we certainly cannot live without it, but we could live without the potential for water damage at home.

There are many different things that can cause water damage. Are you familiar with some of the most common causes?

Typical Causes of Water Damage

For the period covering 2009–2015, The Travelers Companies Inc. reported that the five top causes of home claims were:

  • Damage caused by wind
  • Water damage not involved with the weather
  • Hail
  • Water damage related to weather
  • Crime

Water damage is included two times. It is either caused by the weather or some other accident within the home and is listed as such. Non-weather-related issues can come from things like plumbing and appliances, while weather-related damage naturally consists of issues from rain and snow.

The top five causes for water damage are plumbing issues, leaky washing machines, bursting water pipes, older water heaters and bad weather.

Protecting Your Home From Water Damage

We can see that water damage is an expensive occurrence, but what if none of it was covered by your homeowners policy? The best practice is to review your policy so that you know exactly what is covered. A standard policy will usually cover:

  • Winter weather damage
  • Water from discharge and overflow, including accidental
  • Failing pipes for a steam heating system
  • Frozen pipes

Avoiding water-related issues and potential damage situations can be done with a bit of work and preparation.

There are ways to keep water damage from occurring, thereby saving yourself some headaches in the future. Here are some ideas for proactive preventive maintenance to aid in the protection of your home from the damage caused by water:

  • Hire a plumber to install back flow valves and standpipes in basement drains.
  • Raise your appliances and personal items up off the basement floor.
  • Clean all gutters and downspouts.
  • Never place grease down the kitchen drain.

These preventive tips and solutions can help you clear up a multitude of potential water damage problems at home.

Water damage can be a nightmare to deal with, but fortunately, you will always have SERVPRO® of North Huntington on your side to help with the cleanup and restoration process.

Damage Caused By Thunderstorms

7/8/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of North Huntington is here to make storm damage "Like it never even happened."

How Thunderstorms Form

There are an estimated 16 million thunderstorms annually throughout the world. In the United States, the number of thunderstorms typically comes to approximately 100,000 per year—10% of those are considered severe.

Various Types of Damage

There are plenty of parts of a thunderstorm that can prove to be dangerous, but one of the most serious risks is the opportunity for winds to send debris flying.

Wind speeds during severe thunderstorms can reach over 57.5 mph. This is more than enough speed to create chaos and damage to your property.

When there are strong winds, there is always a chance for non-threatening items to turn into a serious threat in projectile mode. These items can include tree branches, gravel, mailboxes, fencing, lawn furniture, potted plants and garbage cans. Take some time to check on and secure these items in your yard before any thunderstorms come rolling into town.

Thunderstorms are also responsible for causing the following types of damage besides wind damage:

Lightning damage. Lightning damage can be broken into two categories, fire and electrical. When lightning strikes a home, it will pass through the electrical wiring and can cause damage to any appliance that is plugged into an outlet.

Tornado damage. With wind speeds that can reach upwards of 200 mph, tornadoes are capable of causing immense amounts of damage over large areas in a limited amount of time.

If a thunderstorm has resulted in damage to your home or business, know that the team at SERVPRO® of North Huntington is available 247 to help with cleanup and restoration.

Stopping Water Damage Before It Starts

7/1/2019 (Permalink)

With flooding involved in 90% of natural disasters, even homeowners who do not consider themselves “at risk” for a flood or water damage should know how to prepare should the need arise.

Stopping Water Damage Before It Starts

There is no way to halt a natural disaster or stop the floodwaters from rising in your home, but with a bit of advanced planning, homeowners can greatly lessen the water damage they sustain:

Know your risk. Using a tool such as the FEMA Flood Map Tool will help you understand what your risks are relative to your location, so you can plan ahead better for all types of scenarios.

Turn off electricity. When it comes to electricity and water, it is better to be safe than to be sorry. Cut off power to all affected areas of the house to reduce the risk of electric shock.

Discuss emergency procedures. Ensure all members of the household understand how to cut off the electricity and locate emergency supplies if necessary.

Elevate valuables. Precious items or irreplaceable documents should be elevated and stored out of the way of the water. Considering a safety deposit box at a local bank might also be wise.

Anchor propane and fuel tanks. A tipped fuel tank can lead to water pollution or even fires if the conditions are right. Anchor fuel tanks solidly to your home or the ground in order to prevent them from getting swept away.

Keeping your home and family safe is most important in the event of a disaster. By taking advance precautions and understanding evacuation procedures ahead of time, homeowners can help to protect their home from extensive water damage and protect their family from danger as well.

If you’ve experienced water damage due to a flood or other causes, SERVPRO® of North Huntington is here to help. Our technicians are fully trained in water remediation, and our 247 Emergency Line means we’ll be there for you when you call.

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of North Huntington will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Mold exists in every household, no matter how spotless you keep it.

6/15/2019 (Permalink)

Mold exists in every household, no matter how spotless you keep it.

Mold is a natural part of the air in any home. It becomes a problem if it can grow and spread, which can lead to respiratory problems in those with suppressed immune systems and who suffer from allergies or have asthma. Severe indoor mold infestations can also affect otherwise healthy people.

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment.  In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified.  Fungi produces some very useful results.  Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages.  The unique flavor of bleu cheese is a result of mold.  An edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi. In fact, lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold too!

We’re Here to “Restore First” Following Fire Disaster

6/7/2019 (Permalink)

When disaster strikes, we can get there faster, but that is not the only reason why you should make us first on your list of calls to make if the worst should occur.

When working with your property, our technicians use a “restore first” mentality, which is aided by the use of specialized equipment and cleaning techniques. This mentality will also help reduce the interruptions to your life caused by this disaster and help get your home or business back to pre-disaster condition.

Restore First After a Fire

Every fire damage event is different, and while our highly trained team can come up with a unique solution that is tailored to your needs, the general process remains the same

Knowing what to do after a fire has damaged your property is stressful, but that’s where we come in.

The team of highly trained restoration experts at SERVPRO® of North Huntington is available for emergency cleanup and restoration services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Avoiding Fire Hazards While Cooking

5/28/2019 (Permalink)

Do you have fond memories of spending quality time in the kitchen with loved ones while catching up with each other or preparing and sharing a meal together? The kitchen can be a wonderfully versatile place, but it is also a place where many home fires break out.

Cooking fires top the charts as the No. 1 cause of home fires and injuries, and the leading cause of these kitchen fires is unattended cooking.

In 2017 alone, State Farm paid out in excess of $130 million in homeowners insurance claims related to grease and other cooking fires. According to the insurance company, these are the worst states for kitchen fires:

  • North Carolina
  • Texas
  • Pennsylvania
  • California
  • Ohio
  • Illinois
  • Maryland
  • New York
  • Alabama
  • Georgia

Cooking Safety Tips

Besides the obvious precaution of staying in the kitchen while cooking, this is not the only fire safety tip you should be following. Here are some other helpful tips to observe while cooking:

1. Be careful of the type of clothing you are wearing. If your outfit has long, flowing sleeves or is oversized and baggy, it could catch on fire if you aren’t careful while cooking over the stove. It’s best to wear short or close-fitted sleeve shirts and make sure any baggy shirts are tucked in or tied back.

2. Keep flammable objects away from the stovetop. Make sure kitchen towels, oven mitts, appliance cords or even curtains aren’t too close to the stovetop when cooking. Ideally, anything flammable will be moved away from it.

3. Equip your home with a fire extinguisher in or near the kitchen. Hopefully you have at least one fire extinguisher located in your home, ideally one that is near your kitchen. Make sure you know how to properly use the extinguisher, just in case it is ever needed.

4. Hot grease is a fire hazard when placed in the garbage too soon. Do not throw hot grease in the garbage can. The grease may not be on fire, but it could be hot enough to cause something in the trash to burn. You should let the grease cool a bit and then dispose of it in an old coffee can. Also, know the smoke points of the oils you cook with. Be sure to never subject a low-smoke point oil to high heat when cooking, as it could catch fire.

5. Make sure you have a fire escape plan established. Thinking about and being prepared for the worst that can happen can save lives, and it’s better to be safe than sorry should an emergency occur. Go over exit routes and designated meeting places with your family, making sure that everyone knows what to do.

Fire safety in the kitchen is an absolute necessity, as it can help prevent dangerous and destructive cooking fires. If your home has experienced damage from a cooking fire, know that SERVPRO® of North Huntington is here to make it “Like it never even happened.”

The difference between a tornado watch and tornado warning.

5/13/2019 (Permalink)

What to Do if There Is a Tornado

Have you thought about the difference between a tornado watch and tornado warning?

Tornadoes can take you by surprise and wreak absolute havoc on the areas they touch down in. While meteorologists and weather services can provide some advanced warning to potential threats, tornadoes can still occur with little to no warning at all.

If your home or business has been damaged by a tornado, know that SERVPRO® of North Huntington is ready and waiting to jump into action and get cleanup and restoration of your property underway.

How to Get Your Business Ready for Emergencies

5/8/2019 (Permalink)

There are various matters and tasks that must be taken care of while running a business, but one of the most important tasks to think about, which is often overlooked, is emergency preparedness.

While having a plan in place is not insurance against having a disaster of some sort occur, it can still give your business a leg up where safety is concerned and at least ensure that your employees will know what to do if a disaster or emergency situation should occur.

Making a Plan

We highly recommend that you make this a priority and take the time to sit down and work out an emergency preparedness plan for various disaster situations.

There are numerous emergencies your business should have a preparedness plan in place for, including:

You should make sure that safety training and familiarization of emergency preparedness plans are included in the company onboarding process, team-building activities and continuing education opportunities. By helping employees familiarize themselves with proper safety protocol and emergency procedures, you’re not only giving them the tools to protect themselves, but you are also setting them up to help protect guests/visitors and the business itself.

Where to Start

As you think about beginning to set up an emergency plan for your business, consider which scenarios are most likely to occur—and even those that you feel are a longshot but could still happen. After all, it’s better to be over-prepared for any worst-case scenario and not be caught off guard.

You will find plenty of online resources to help guide you through this process, including Ready.gov, the American Red Cross, FEMA and the CDC.

You should also conduct a business impact analysis (BIA), which can help predict the potential effect a disaster may have on your business. This would include lost or delayed sales and income, increased expenses from repairs, and delayed implementation of business plans. Don’t forget to make sure a crisis communications plan is in place, too.

After you have developed an emergency preparedness plan, be sure to review it and practice it with your employees.

Tornado Safety Info Everyone Should Know

5/6/2019 (Permalink)

When you know that the weather in the spring can be unpredictable, you can take steps to always be prepared for the chance of severe thunderstorms that lead to the perfect conditions for a tornado to strike.

The months of April and May are notorious for the highest occurrences of tornadoes at 30% and 24%, respectively. This means we are currently entering into the height of tornado season throughout the United States. Included in this blog are some tips and information on tornadoes that can help keep your family prepared for the worst possible scenario.

Ideal Conditions for a Tornado

There are approximately over 1,000 tornadoes that occur in the U.S. each year, and they are the product of severe thunderstorms, especially those known as “supercells.”

Mother Nature Can Be Unpredictable in the Spring!

4/17/2019 (Permalink)

We welcome you, spring! Now we can enjoy your weather, but also get ready for whatever Mother Nature may choose to send our way!

An Increased Chance for Severe Weather

With the arrival of spring, we are able to enjoy longer days and more sunshine, but unfortunately, spring also can produce some sobering severe weather events throughout the country. It’s the dealer’s choice at this time of year, which means the weather may change at moment’s notice.

Unstable temperatures are the cause of changing weather, and they can change from warm to cold in the same day. That temperature change can result in extreme weather changes as well.

Thunderstorms are a regular occurrence throughout the spring and are the main cause of severe weather. They can occur whenever warm, moist air collides with cool, dry air, which is most common in the spring and summer.

In studying the natural catastrophe losses in the U.S. for 2017, the most common came from severe thunderstorms and they produced some of the costliest results. Out of 50 events, there were 85 fatalities and an estimated total of $25.4 billion in overall losses.

Severe thunderstorms can be responsible for the threat of flooding, high winds and even tornadoes if the conditions are right. It has been found that in modern history, 10% of all violent tornadoes have occurred in March, with April, May and June taking the top spots at 30%, 24% and 15% respectively.

Check Out These Spring Weather Tips!

4/17/2019 (Permalink)

Despite its unpredictability, there is one thing that always remains true of the spring weather season: It always happens. If your home or business is damaged in a storm, you can depend on SERVPRO® of North Huntington to get the cleanup and restoration process started fast.

How to Be Prepared

We may not be able to predict the weather with 100% accuracy, but fortunately, forecasters have the technology and the tools available to them to at least give us fair warning of an impending severe weather event. Advanced warnings, along with the right preparation, can greatly improve overall safety for your family.

Here are some preventive preparations you take to prepare your home for the chance of severe weather:

There are a number of things that could cause a water damage or flood, including:

  • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
  • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
  • And many more

Why Call Us? Because Response Time Matters

3/27/2019 (Permalink)

When faced with disaster in your home or business, time becomes an especially precious commodity. When it is your home or livelihood on the line, you don’t have the benefit of waiting for help with the cleanup and restoration needed—you need it right away.

We know that a fast response is critical, which is why a faster response to any size disaster is more than just a slogan to us.

Why a Fast Response Matters

When it comes to your belongings or business being on the line, time is not something you have a lot of regarding disaster cleanup. When water damage has come into play, this is especially true and can be caused by various means such as flooding, appliance and/or plumbing failures, storm damage and fire damage, as water is used to put out the fires.

It only takes a matter of minutes for water to affect the walls, the floors, upholstery and your belongings within your property, where it will saturate everything in its path.

The effects of water damage within the first 24 hours include:

  • Drywall beginning to swell and break down
  • Metal surfaces beginning to tarnish
  • Furniture beginning to swell and crack
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper items spreading and staining
  • The beginning of a musty odor

The damage continues to worsen as time goes on. Between 48 hours and a week later, you could begin to see:

  • The growth and spreading of mold and mildew
  • Swelling and warping of doors, windows and studs
  • Metal beginning to rust and corrode
  • Paint beginning to blister
  • Wood flooring swelling and warping
  • The possibilities of serious biohazard contamination

Water damage that is not properly treated for over a week can lead to a dramatically increased restoration time and costs and can also impact structural safety. Don't wait! Call SERVPRO of North Huntington today, 631-423-1734.

We're here to help!

Protecting Your Business From Fire Hazards

3/13/2019 (Permalink)

Business owners carry a lot of responsibility. As a business owner, one of those responsibilities is considering plenty of safety factors regarding risks to your business, staff and visitors. One thing that will need to be addressed is fire prevention.

Protecting Your Business From Fire Hazards

By focusing on fire risk assessment, fire prevention and staff education, you are taking some of the many steps that will help reduce the chance of a fire breaking out.

First, make an assessment of any fire hazard risks in your facility. To aid you in this step, in some areas, local governments may offer a visit from a fire marshal to work with you in identifying these risks and providing guidance on your fire prevention plan.

You’ll want to make sure that the right fire protection equipment, such as automatic sprinkler systems, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, are in place on each floor.

Finally, you must consider the safety of your employees. By creating a fire plan and taking time to review it with your staff, you’ll be making sure everyone knows what to do in the case of a fire. By conducting fire drills at least once a year and reviewing evacuation plans and routes as well as the location of first-aid kits, your fire safety procedures will remain fresh in their minds.

Despite best efforts with fire prevention and safety tips, the worst could always happen at your business. If a fire has damaged your business, SERVPRO® of North Huntington is available to help make it "Like it never even happened."

Leading Causes of Commercial Structure Fires

3/8/2019 (Permalink)

Leading Causes of Commercial Structure Fires

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the main causes of structure fires to office properties from 2007–2011 were (in order):

  1. Cooking equipment, 29% of fires
  2. Electrical distribution and lighting equipment, 12% of fires
  3. Heating equipment, 11% of fires
  4. Intentional, 10% of fires
  5. Smoking materials, 9% of fires
  6. Exposure, 4% of fires
  7. Electronic, office or entertainment equipment, 3% of fires

Of those causes, intentional, exposure, and electrical distribution and lighting equipment accounted for the most property damage with 20%, 18% and 15% respectively.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that in 2007, fires and explosions accounted for 3% of all workplace fatalities.

When looking to more recent numbers, the NFPA estimates that from 2007–2011, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 3,340 fires in office properties per year. Those fires resulted in an annual average of four deaths, 44 injuries and $112 million in direct property damage.

Mold Facts

3/1/2019 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.

It doesn’t matter what type of water has caused damage to your home or business, SERVPRO® of North Huntington is here to help get the situation under control and make it "Like it never even happened." Don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you need emergency cleanup and restoration services!

All floodwaters are not created equal, as you will read in this blog. It is easy to think that all water causing damage is the same, but there are three classifications for it: clean, gray and black. By understanding the differences in these types of water, you will understand how to better handle a floodwater situation.

Regardless of the type of water that has caused the damage, there is always going to be a process of cleaning up and restoration to follow. You must, however, first remove all of the moisture and damp items quickly so that mold will not begin to grow in an ideal environment.

Clean Water

Much like its name, water that is free of contaminants is considered “clean” and not the type to pose an immediate threat to your health. Examples of clean water types would be water from:

  • Broken water lines
  • Malfunctioning appliances
  • Toilet holding tanks
  • Snow melt and rainwater

Clean water damage is the easiest type of water damage to clean up after, as there will be fewer microbes living in the water. But 48 hours after the incident and after contact with building surfaces, clean water then becomes a category two type of water, gray water.

Gray Water

In gray water, there were be a slight amount of contaminants, and water damage cleanup and restoration from this type of water becomes a bit more complicated. It may pose a health risk, due to the fact that it will contain chemical or biological contamination. Considering the amount of contamination involved means that it would need to be thoroughly treated before safe consumption.

Gray water will likely be the type of water that can come from dishwashers, aquariums, showers, etc. The 48-hour exposure time applies here as well since gray water will turn into black water if not treated.

Black Water

Black water is a serious matter and the most hazardous of the three classifications because it is considered highly contaminated by harmful chemicals and biological matter. This type of water includes floodwaters containing soil and all sewage waters.

Sewage will be contaminated with microbes, including bacteria, protozoans, molds, fungi and more—many of which are harmful to humans.

Some of the diseases transmitted by black water are:

  • Cholera
  • Typhoid
  • Hepatitis
  • Gastroenteritis-type illnesses

Remember, where floodwater is concerned, all water should be considered black water and treated as such since it picks up contaminants along its path.

These three types of floodwater are all recognized by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Remediation Certification (IICRC), the organization that certifies and sets the standards for the cleaning and restoration industries. Our technicians all study IICRC standards and best practices in water restoration and are available to help determine the steps to take to get your home back to normal.

Recovering From Water Damage

Recovering From Water Damage

If you find yourself and your home or business in a water damage situation, call SERVPRO of North Huntington for help! 631-423-1734

After taking the first steps and contacting your insurance company and plumber for repair, evaluate the extent of the water damage in your home and attempt to identify the type of water that is involved.

The types of water that are involved in water damage are:

  1. Water from rain, condensation, leaky pipes, etc. is called “clean” water.

  2. Slightly dirty water from dishwashers, washing machines, clean toilets, etc. is called “gray” water.

  3. Water from sewage or serious flooding from nearby rivers, etc. is considered “black” water, and this water can cause serious health problems.

Following a water damage disaster, all affected materials and content will need to be removed or properly dried and disinfected.

It may seem like recovering from water damage is an overwhelming and slightly impossible task, but it doesn’t have to be. You can call on the highly trained experts at SERVPRO® of North Huntington, who are here to make it "Like it never even happened."

Preventing Water Damage

2/18/2019 (Permalink)

One of the most common and costliest disasters your home may experience is water damage. Anything from a burst pipe to a malfunctioning dishwasher or storm damage are just some of the countless ways water damage could strike your home.

Water damage is a common issue for homeowners to deal with, but there are ways you can safeguard your home from this devastating scenario.

Initial Tips for Preventing Water Damage

Not only is water damage a hassle to deal with, but there may be long-term impacts on your home, one of them being mold. This is a common side effect of water damage, because it begins to grow and flourish within 24–48 hours of exposure to moisture.

When considering some ways to protect your home, it will be helpful if you can break it down by areas of impact. These areas could include basements, kitchens, bathrooms, flooring and ceilings.

You can help prevent water damage in the basement by preventing any water seepage. This can be done by resealing vulnerable areas of the basement, making sure water drains away from your home and installing a backwater valve.

Your kitchen and bathrooms can experience water damage due to plumbing and appliance issues and failures.

Make it a point to regularly:

  • Inspect all appliances for issues with hoses and faucets
  • Check the seals and caulking around your showers and tubs to make sure there is no leakage
  • Know where the main shut-off valve is in your home
  • Don’t leave your washing machine or dishwasher running when you are not home

There are things you can do to protect the possessions in your home from water damage, but don’t be surprised if it is not always possible. Use waterproof bins to store items and keep items stored on shelves off of the floor—which is especially recommended when using your basement for storage.

Prepping Your Family for Severe Weather

1/25/2019 (Permalink)

We are here to help 24/7, and are only a phone call away!

What to Think About in Severe Weather Planning

Being prepared is one of the best ways to come out ahead of the weather, and having an established family emergency plan is a smart move.

If your family already has an emergency plan in place, that’s great.

However, tornadoes aren’t the only weather circumstance that requires a form of storm shelter, and you can visit ready.gov to learn more about these situations.

Your family will need an emergency communication plan in place. It is easy to rely on cell phones to keep in touch with your family, but sometimes that will not be feasible as cell communication is reliant on towers that could sustain damage during the storm.

Power could also be lost, phones could be misplaced, and if there is no power, you will not be able to recharge them when needed. Also, set up a safe meeting place for your family, so that you can all meet there if separated.

If a storm does cause damage to your home or business, don’t hesitate to call your friends at SERVPRO of North Huntington to get the cleanup and restoration process started.

The Importance of a Disaster Plan for Your Business - Part 2

1/21/2019 (Permalink)

Protecting Your Assets From Disaster

If you have a business that is located in a brick and mortar location, you’ll still need to make careful decisions about how to protect the assets within the building. From equipment to merchandise, there are thousands of dollars at risk when a natural disaster strikes.

Keep an updated and complete inventory of your assets, equipment and merchandise, and whenever possible, having photographs prior to a disaster is always desirable if insurance claims will have to be made. Computer servers are often used to store your assets, so you should take the necessary steps to ensure that a backup system is working and the storage system, such as a cloud storage option, cannot be damaged.

As a building owner, you can enlist the help of a contractor who will work with you to uncover areas that may need to be improved upon with regard to the building’s structural integrity. The contractor can discuss with you possible safety upgrades and offer advice on any areas that may need to be upgraded for certain weather situations.

Back to Business Following the Disaster

When a natural disaster does occur and if your business suffers damage, it is possible that your business will have to be closed due to damage sustained. Every day you remain closed is another day of lost profits. Build a disaster relief fund to help cover any additional costs that are not covered by your insurance.

Make up a list of contractors who will be available for any construction repairs, and find a cleanup and restoration service will be available to quickly respond to your emergency situation.

Knowing what to do when disaster strikes your business is of the utmost importance. When it comes to the cleanup and restoration aspects, depend on SERVPRO® of North Huntington to be there for you.

The Importance of a Disaster Plan for Your Business - Part 1

1/14/2019 (Permalink)

We hear news every day about everything from floods, hurricanes and tornadoes to wildfires and earthquakes. In order to survive these devastating events, the key to being able to roll with the punches, so to speak, is to be prepared for a multitude of worst-case scenarios.

Being prepared for those scenarios means creating a natural disaster plan for your business. This blog will discuss some of the aspects to consider when designing that plan.

What to Include in a Disaster Plan

There are many things and areas you will need to consider when putting together a disaster plan for your business.

Included in those considerations should be:

  1. Providing protection for your employees - Part 1
  2. Securing your assets - Part 2 will follow in future blog
  3. How to get business up and running again - Part 2 will follow in future blog

Many checklists have been compiled by sources like the Red Cross, FEMA and Ready.gov to help you identify areas that need to be included in your natural disaster preparedness plan. These sources can also let you see how prepared you truly are.

Safety Planning for Your Staff

If a disaster were to strike without warning, people come first. Having a plan that lays out procedures and safety measures for employees and visitors will be of the utmost importance.

Ask yourself questions like are evacuation routes and exits from your facility properly marked, is there an area that can serve as a shelter space, is there a need to install emergency lighting, and do I have a volunteer team in my staff designated as “safety wardens” who are properly trained and ready to aid in all emergency efforts?

When choosing a space for a shelter, investigate using a basement or storm cellar in case of tornadoes or other high-wind situations. If there is no basement space, find a small interior room on the lowest level of the building, such as a closet or interior hallway.

With SERVPRO® of North Huntington, you can count on us to get to the disaster faster and make it "Like it never even happened." Our training and expertise have prepared us to help with water damage, storm damage, fire damage and mold remediation quickly and effectively.

Understanding Mold and Mold Spores

1/7/2019 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors.

It is impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.

Water Damage Culprits in Your Home

12/17/2018 (Permalink)

According to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), the leading causes of water damage are:

  • Plumbing supply system failures. This happens when frozen pipes burst due to the buildup in water pressure caused by freezing water or when the supply system material fails resulting in a leaking or bursting pipes. According to IBHS, plumbing supply system failures are the leading source of residential water losses, costing an average of $5,092 per incident after the deductible. Homes 16 to 40 years of age made up a larger group of supply system material failure claims, also according to IBHS.

  • Plumbing drain system failures. This situation occurs when sewer drains back up and overflow into a home or from construction material performance issues. In its study, IBHS found that 52% of drain system failures were caused by sewer backups and 37% were related to material performance issues. Southern state claims were found to be more expensive than northern state claims according to IBHS.

  • Toilet failures. Toilets are the second highest source of residential water loss after plumbing supply systems. Anything from faulty fill valves or clogged drain lines can cause toilets to malfunction and cause water damage and, according to IBHS, toilet failures on the first floor of a home resulted in more extensive claims than those that occurred in basements or upper floors.

  • Water heater failures. Water heaters reaching or passing their life expectancy begin to rust and corrode, which can result in leaking or bursting issues. IBHS found that 69% of all water heater failures resulted from a slow leak or sudden bursting and, on average, cost $4,444 per incident following the deductible.

  • Washing machine failures. Machines overflowing, supply hose failures and drain line failures are typically the causes of washing machine failures and are one of the top 10 sources of residential water losses. Per IBHS, supply hose failures were to blame for over half of all washing machine-related losses.

Water Damage and Insurance Claims

12/10/2018 (Permalink)

If your home has experienced any type of water damage, the team at SERVPRO® of North Huntington is available 247 to help with cleanup and restoration and make it “Like it never even happened.”

Severe storms and water damage. It’s one of the first things that comes to mind for many, but while severe storms and flooding can cause extensive water damage, they are often not the main culprits.

Were you aware that various items in your home could be responsible for many situations that result in water damage?

Water Damage Is a Major Threat for Homeowners

Homeowners may at some time face water damage as it is the third most common reason that homeowners filed homeowners insurance claims between 2011 and 2015, with an average payout per claim of $8,861.

Understanding the difference between water damage and gradual damage and how they can impact insurance claims is important. Examples of gradual damage are things that have been happening over time, such as plumbing issues in the walls causing damage to the walls, ceilings or floors, or water damage caused by cracks in the foundation. Some aspects of gradual water damage are not covered by homeowners insurance, unfortunately, while some storm-related water damage is.

Protect Your Home From Fire

11/28/2018 (Permalink)

Experiencing a home fire is a nightmare scenario.

For many Americans, experiencing a home fire is a nightmare scenario that has become a reality. Each year more than 350,000 house fires occur in the U.S. Fortunately, you can take steps to help protect your home from fire by learning about and watching for fire hazards within it.

The primary cause of house fires is cooking, but smoking is the primary cause of home fire deaths. An estimated 17,200 house fires were reported in 2014 due to smoking materials such as cigarettes, pipes and cigars.

There were 570 deaths, 1,140 injuries and $426 million in property damage from those fires, according to the Coalition for Fire-Safe Cigarettes.

If you smoke, it is safest to smoke outside, as most deaths resulted from fires which started in living rooms or bedrooms. Fire-safe cigarettes are the best option, and using a deep, sturdy ashtray is safest.

SERVPRO of North Huntington is always here to help should you experience fire or smoke damage.

Candles Require Caution!

11/28/2018 (Permalink)

Fire and smoke damage can be devastating to homes, and in many circumstances, can be accompanied by the water damage from firefighting efforts.

Candles Require Caution

The National Fire Protection Association found that fire departments in the U.S. were called to an estimated 8,700 home structure fires a year that were started by candles during a five-year period from 2011 to 2015. These fires resulted in 82 deaths, 800 injuries and $295 million in direct property damage.

Candles were reported to have caused 2 percent of home fires, with 3 percent resulting in death and 7 percent with injuries. There were an average of 24 home candle fires reported per day during those five years, with December having the highest amount of calls for the year.

Candle fires during this time span were responsible for 37 percent of bedroom fires and 36 percent of the associated deaths and 51 percent of the associated injuries.

Things to remember when using candles:

  • Keep lit candles at least one foot away from flammable materials.
  • Always use a sturdy holder that won’t tip over.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Don’t go to sleep with a candle burning.
  • Do not use candles if oxygen is being used in the home.

SERVPRO of North Huntington is here to help restore your home to pre-fire condition. 631-423-1734

Severe Storms Cause Damaging Winds

11/28/2018 (Permalink)

There are many concerns that come with severe storms, with one of those being the threat of damaging winds. These winds can come with little to no notice and can cause long-term structural impacts.

Concerns About High Winds

Tornadoes and hurricanes are probably what first comes to mind when thinking about damaging winds. However, those are not the only ones to be concerned about.

Traditionally, damaging winds are those with wind speeds exceeding 50–60 mph and can be the result of a strong thunderstorm. You will commonly hear damaging winds referred to as “straight-line” winds, which differentiates from the damage from a tornado.

The damage from these winds can be especially destructive. Straight-line winds can cause loose articles to become projectiles. Windows and the roof can take a beating from straight-line winds, and if it’s extensive enough, water damage can result as the outside elements come indoors.

Anyone who lives in a thunderstorm-prone area is at risk from damaging winds. Many structures can suffer from damaging winds, but there is one structure in particular that is especially at risk. For example, even mobile homes that are anchored can become a victim of wind gusts over 80 mph.

If your home has been hit by damaging winds and resulting water damage, our highly trained specialists at SERVPRO® of North Huntington are here 247 to help with cleanup and restoration of your home.

How to Protect Your Home

There are a number of ways you can help protect your property from damaging winds. Some are listed below, but keep the “Two R’s” in mind: reinforce and remove.

  • Have your garage door reinforced by a professional.

  • Remove or anchor loose items on your property that could be blown around and tossed by the wind. This includes trash cans, grills and outdoor furniture.

  • Hire a professional to remove any large or dying trees and branches that could be blown over onto your home.

We don’t always receive advanced notice about straight-line or damaging winds. But, as we all know, being proactive with some of the above preventive items may just protect you from damage.

Also, if you are building a new home or renovating an older home, make sure that the windows, walls and doors are meet the building code for your area.

Do you smell mold?

7/2/2018 (Permalink)

Do you smell "mold" in your home?

Do you smell mold? Mold has a particular musty, earthy smell. If you smell something not quite right near an area that is prone to dampness and constant moisture, you may be smelling mold. Mold feeds on both wood and drywall, so if you smell a strong, musty odor but don’t see any discoloration, the problem may be inside of your wall. Check for leaks both inside and outside of the wall to help you track down the source of the smell.

If you suspect you have a mold problem, call us – SERVPRO of North Huntington 631-423-1734.  A professional in mold remediation will examine your home or business and determine the next course of action needed.

Wet or dry smoke damage???

6/25/2018 (Permalink)

Different Types of Smoke

An edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi, and lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold.

Mold exists in every household, no matter how spotless you keep it.

It’s a natural part of the air in any home. Mold becomes a problem if it can grow and spread, which can lead to respiratory problems in those with suppressed immune systems and who suffer from allergies or have asthma. Severe indoor mold infestations can also affect otherwise healthy people.

We are here to help with your mold concerns!

 The Good…

Things to be aware of…

Appearance

Do you see mold?

 Odor

Smoke or Soot Damage? Call us for help.

7/13/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

A basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are a number of reasons why your basement could flood, including:

  • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
  • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
  • And many more

SERVPRO of North Huntington has professional tips for mold growth.

4/4/2017 (Permalink)

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of North Huntington for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

About Our Mold Remediation Services

SERVPRO of North Huntington specializes in mold cleanup and restoration, in fact, it’s a cornerstone of our business.  Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate your mold problem quickly and safely.

If your home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO of North Huntington can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to help!
